On July 1, 2001, Greater Valley EMS placed its bicycle EMS team in service, the first in the Bradford-Susquehanna EMS Region. The purpose of this team is to add more versatile emergency medical services coverage during large events and gatherings and to promote positive community relations. The bike team consists of 20 volunteers who are certified as either Pennsylvania Department of Health Paramedics or EMT’s.
The team operates on 4 donated mountain bikes which carry enough equipment to initiate advanced life support care prior to the ambulance arrival. A bike team is made up of 2 EMT’s and is stocked with oxygen, AED’s, IV fluid, advanced airways and ACLS medications. Each bike is fit with saddle bags to hold the equipment and are removable to allow for situations where EMT’s must leave the bike to establish patient contact. If you would like more information about the GVEMS bike team, please contact Sonya Bement, NREMT-P, Outreach Supervisor.
